If the drive-thru is calling your name, this McChicken recipe is such a fun way to make that crispy fast-food favorite right at home. It's simple, protein-packed (hello 25g!), and perfect for a weeknight when you want fast food flavor without leaving the house.

Hand holding a crispy homemade McChicken sandwich on a brioche bun with lettuce and mayo.

In high school, I used to be obsessed with McDonald's McChickens and probably ordered one anytime we stopped for fast food. This homemade version brings back that crispy sandwich vibe, but with simple ingredients and an easy air fryer twist that feels a little more weeknight-friendly.

As a Southern dietitian and busy mom, I love a recipe that satisfies a craving without making dinner complicated. By making it at home, you get to control the ingredients, add a little extra protein, and skip the deep fryer.

Ingredients for Copycat McChicken Sandwich

This healthy McChicken recipe uses simple ingredients to create a crispy sandwich that tastes like a fast-food favorite!

Ingredients for homemade McChicken sandwiches including ground chicken, cornflakes, buns, mustard, lettuce, and spices.
  • Ground chicken: Ground chicken makes it easy to shape thin patties that cook quickly in the air fryer and give you that classic chicken sandwich texture.
  • Yellow mustard: Adding yellow mustard right into the chicken mixture gives the patties a little tang and helps bring out that fast-food-style flavor.
  • Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper add savory flavor to the chicken patties without making the recipe complicated.
  • Cornflakes: Crushed cornflakes create a crispy, golden breading that works really well in the air fryer.
  • Brioche buns: Brioche buns make the sandwich soft, slightly sweet, and a little more special, but regular hamburger buns work too.
  • Shredded lettuce: Finely shredded iceberg lettuce gives this sandwich that classic McChicken crunch.
  • Mayo: Mayo keeps the sandwich creamy and familiar, just like the original.

See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions & Variations

This air fryer McChicken recipe is easy to change up depending on what your family likes.

  • Add cayenne pepper, hot sauce, or chili powder to the chicken mixture if you want a spicy McChicken with a little extra heat.
  • Melt American cheese, cheddar, or pepper jack over the warm patty if your family loves a cheesy chicken sandwich.
  • Add comeback sauce, slaw, or a drizzle of hot honey if you want a Southern-style McChicken with a little extra flavor.
  • Use regular hamburger buns, potato buns, or whole wheat buns if you do not have brioche buns on hand.
  • Shape the chicken mixture into smaller patties and serve them on Hawaiian rolls if you want a slider version for parties, tailgates, or kid-friendly dinners.
  • Serve the crispy chicken patty over shredded lettuce with sauce, pickles, and chopped tomatoes if you want a McChicken bowl instead of a sandwich.

How To Make A McChicken In The Air Fryer

This recipe comes together quickly for a delicious dinner the whole family will love!

Crushed cornflake breading blended with seasonings in a food processor.

Step 1: Make the cornflake breading by adding the cornflakes, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, and ½ teaspoon paprika to a food processor and pulsing until finely crushed. You can also add everything to a zip-top bag and crush it with a rolling pin. Pour the cornflake mixture into a shallow bowl and set it aside.

Step 8: Toast the brioche buns, then spread mayo on the bottom bun. Add the crispy chicken patty and shredded lettuce, then place the top bun on and serve right away.

Tips For the Best Chicken Sandwich Recipe

A few small tips make a big difference when you're working with ground chicken in the air fryer.

  • Wet your hands before shaping the ground chicken patties so the mixture does not stick as much.
  • Shape each patty slightly wider than the bun because air fryer chicken patties shrink a little as they cook.
  • Chill the patties before cooking if your homemade chicken patties feel too soft to move easily.
  • Check the internal temperature of the ground chicken with a meat thermometer to make sure it reaches 165°F before serving.

What To Serve With McChicken Sandwiches

This homemade McChicken burger is filling on its own, but the right side makes it feel like a full dinner.

  • Serve with crispy fries, sweet potato wedges, or roasted potatoes for a classic burger-night plate.
  • Pair this homemade chicken sandwich with a simple green salad or strawberry salad when you want something fresh on the side.
  • Add pasta salad for a cookout-style dinner that feels perfect for summer nights, tailgates, or casual weekends.
  • Serve crispy chicken sandwiches with pickle spears, fresh fruit salad, or slaw for an easy family-friendly meal.
  • Make this McChicken recipe feel extra fun with corn on the cob, baked beans, or a simple veggie tray.

Storage

This McChicken recipe stores best when you keep the patties separate from the buns and toppings.

  • Leftovers: Store cooked patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Keep buns, lettuce, and mayo separate so the sandwiches do not get soggy.
  • Reheating: Reheat the chicken patties in the air fryer at 350°F for 3 to 5 minutes, or until they're warmed through and crispy again.
  • Freezer: Freeze McChicken patties after cooking by wrapping them tightly and storing them in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months.

FAQ

Can I make this McChicken recipe without an air fryer?

Absolutely! You can bake the patties in the oven at 400°F or cook them in a skillet with a little oil. The air fryer gives the crispiest texture with the least mess, but both methods work.

Can I meal prep homemade McChicken patties?

Yes, you can cook the patties ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator or freezer. For best results, wait to add the bun, lettuce, and mayo until right before serving.

Is this McChicken recipe healthier than fast food?

It can be a more balanced option because you control the ingredients and cook the patties in the air fryer. Not to mention, this recipe has 25g of protein vs 14g for McDonald's version!

Can I make this recipe spicy?

Yes! Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the chicken mixture, then finish the sandwich with spicy mayo or pepper jack cheese!
