Pecan crusted chicken tenders are my crispy, weeknight win with almost zero fuss. I make them in the air fryer for a fast, golden crunch that actually sticks. Thanks to the Georgia pecans, these tenders have big flavor with a simple, beginner-friendly method.

Sheet pan of pecan crusted chicken tenders with a bowl of honey mustard for dipping.

We know our fried chicken in the South, but as a Southern registered dietitian, this is my lighter take with straightforward seasoning that works for kids and busy weeknights.

I tested and landed on the air fryer method for real crunch in minutes. If you want options, I included quick oven and pan-fry alternatives, but the air fryer is the move when you want tender, juicy chicken and a crisp coating without babysitting a skillet.

If you are looking for more easy chicken dinner recipes after this, try my air fryer bbq chicken breasts and buffalo chicken smash tacos for fast, weeknight wins.

Ingredients

Just a few pantry staples to make crispy chicken strips with a pecan crunch.

Flat lay of ingredients for pecan crusted chicken tenders including chicken tenderloins, pecans, panko, buttermilk, egg, paprika, garlic powder, and salt.
  • Chicken tenderloins: Quick to cook and easy to coat for even crunch.
  • Buttermilk: A short soak adds a slight tang and keeps the chicken juicy. If you are out, mix 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Egg: Added to the buttermilk to help the crumbs cling through cooking. For egg-free, you can use plain Greek yogurt or mayo as the binder.
  • Pecans: Use raw, unsalted pecans. You'll pulse in quick bursts to make coarse crumbs so they stay crunchy.
  • Panko breadcrumbs: Light crumbs that help keep the nut coating extra crispy!
  • Garlic powder + paprika: Simple, savory flavor that lets the pecans take the lead.

See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions & Variations

Make these crusted chicken fingers your own with a few swaps!

  • Use gluten free panko bread crumbs or finely crushed cornflakes to keep the crust light and crisp.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne to the coating or finish with a drizzle of hot honey for sweet heat.
  • Swap in toasted almonds for a slightly sweeter crunch or walnuts for a deeper, toasty flavor.
  • Go all panko or use crushed cornflakes for a school-lunch friendly option that still crisps up nicely.
  • Serve with honey mustard, buttermilk ranch, or peach or apple BBQ for that Southern vibe.

How to Make Pecan Chicken Tenders

Follow these step-by-step directions for pecan crusted chicken tenders that come out crisp and golden every time.

Chicken tenderloins marinating in buttermilk with paprika and garlic in a zip-top bag.

Step 1: In a bowl, whisk the buttermilk, egg, and 1 teaspoon each garlic powder and paprika. Then pour into a large zip-top bag, add the chicken tenderloins, and chill for 20-30 minutes.

Coarse pecan and panko breadcrumb mixture pulsed in a food processor.

Step 2: In a food processor, add the panko, pecans, and remaining garlic powder, paprika, and salt. Pulse for 1-2 second bursts until it looks like coarse breadcrumbs. Then pour into a shallow bowl so dredging is easy.

Step 3: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F and lightly oil the basket or use a parchment liner.

Step 4: Shake excess marinade off each tender. Press into the pecan mixture to coat all sides and set on your air fryer tray in a single layer. Repeat for the remaining tenders.

Step 5: Air fry for 9-12 minutes, flipping once if needed halfway through, until the thickest piece hits 165°F. Rest 3 minutes for juiciness.

Oven Method (alternative)

  • Heat oven to 400°F. Set a wire rack over a large baking sheet and mist with cooking spray. Bake coated tenders for 15-20 minutes, flipping once, until 165°F. Rest 3 minutes.

Pan-Fry Method (alternative)

  • Add ⅛ inch neutral oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Fry 3-4 minutes per side until golden and 165°F. Move to a rack so the bottoms stay crisp.

Tips For the Best Pecan Chicken Fingers

Use these quick pointers to keep the pecan crust crisp, the chicken juicy, and the process stress-free.

  • Pulse the pecan-panko mix in quick 1-2 second bursts just until it looks like coarse bread crumbs so it stays crunchy and not pasty.
  • Air fry in a single layer and work in batches so hot air can circulate and the coating gets crisp instead of soggy.
  • Use plain panko instead of Italian-style breadcrumbs for a lighter crunch that lets the Georgia pecans shine.
  • Cook until the thickest piece hits 165°F, then let the tenders rest for 3 minutes so they stay juicy and taste their best.

Storage

Keep leftovers fresh with simple refrigerate, freeze, and reheat steps that bring back the crisp.

  • Refrigerate: Store in a covered container for up to 3 days. To reheat, place on a rack or in the air fryer at 400°F for 6-8 minutes until crisp.
  • Freezer: Freeze cooked tenders on a sheet, then bag for up to 2 months and reheat from frozen at 375-400°F for 10-14 minutes.
  • Leftover ideas: Slice onto salads, tuck into wraps, make game day sliders, or build bowls with sweet potato fries, slaw, and a drizzle of peach BBQ!

FAQ

Air fryer vs oven vs pan-fry, which method is the best?

The air fryer is the fastest and crispiest with the least oil. Oven is hands-off for a crowd. Pan-fry gives the deepest golden color when you want that classic crunch.

Can I use boneless chicken breasts instead of tenderloins?

Yes! If using chicken breast, slice each one into 1-inch-wide strips so they cook evenly, then follow the recipe and add a minute or two if needed until the thickest piece hits 165°F.

How do I keep a big batch warm and crisp for game day?

Hold cooked tenders in a 200°F oven in a single layer on a wire rack set over a sheet pan and do not cover, then right before serving re-crisp for 1-2 minutes at 400°F or give them a quick air fryer blast.

What should I serve with pecan crusted chicken tenders?

Round it out with my light squash casserole, roasted green beans, hot honey brussels, or kale harvest salad. Plus, a simple starch like smashed potatoes or sweet potato fries would be delicious. For dipping, go classic with honey mustard dipping sauce or add a Southern twist with bbq sauce!
