Spicy mashed sweet potatoes are the cozy side that brings sweet heat to your plate without stealing the show. This bowl is creamy, a little smoky, and finished with a warm drizzle of hot honey so every bite hits that sweet-meets-spicy balance your people will remember.

Creamy mashed sweet potatoes topped with a pat of butter and drizzle of hot honey.

As a dietitian who loves Southern comfort with a lighter touch, I'm team savory mashed sweet potatoes. The natural sweetness shines, but we build in flavor with smoked paprika, chipotle, and a quick hot-honey butter swirl.

Plus, fiber from sweet potatoes helps you feel satisfied, and a little splash of fat makes the texture silky without turning it heavy.

If you're planning a weeknight dinner or rounding out a holiday menu, these mash up perfectly next to roasted salmon, pork tenderloin, or turkey.

Want more sides for the table? Try my roasted green beans from frozen, hot honey brussels, or polenta cornbread.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Sweet heat that's adjustable: Choose mild, medium, or hot using the heat ladder below so everyone's happy at the table.
  • Make-ahead friendly: Prep the mash a day or two early, then reheat without losing that creamy texture.
  • Real-life fast: Simple ingredients, clear steps, and a quick finish with hot honey so you can get dinner served.

If you need main dish ideas, this side goes well with apple chicken meatballs, hot honey salmon, or pork tenderloin bites.

Ingredients

Simple pantry staples come together for the perfect sweet and spicy mashed sweet potatoes that even Paula Deen would love!

Overhead shot of labeled ingredients for spicy mashed sweet potatoes, including sweet potatoes, butter, hot honey, milk, and spices.
  • Sweet potatoes: Go for orange-fleshed Garnet or Jewel. They mash up ultra creamy and hold flavor well.
  • Milk: I usually reach for 2% since it's in my fridge. Use heavy cream if you want a richer mash. Warm your liquid so it blends in smoothly and keeps things fluffy.
  • Smoked paprika: Brings gentle smokiness without adding extra heat.
  • Chipotle chili powder: Delivers the main kick with a little natural smoke.
  • Hot honey: Stir some into the mash, then finish with a drizzle for that sweet-meets-spicy "swicy" moment.

See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions & Variations

Switch up the spice or sweetness to match your mood and menu.

  • Add ½ teaspoon lime zest and a squeeze of lime at the end for a bright, smoky finish.
  • Swap the hot honey for 1 to 2 teaspoons of maple syrup and keep the chipotle for cozy sweet heat.
  • Stir in 1 teaspoon curry powder and a small grate of fresh ginger, then finish with hot honey to keep the sweet-heat vibe.
  • Set out hot-honey butter, toasted pecans or pepitas, thinly sliced scallions, and cowboy candy jalapeños for an extra kick.

How To Make Spicy Mashed Sweet Potato Recipe

Quick steps for creamy, flavorful mashed sweet potatoes every time.

Cubed sweet potatoes in a large pot of water ready to boil.

Step 1: Peel and cube sweet potatoes. Cover with cold water in a large pot and salt generously. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender.

Step 2: Drain very well, then return potatoes to the pot or mixing bowl for 1 minute to steam off excess moisture.

Step 3: Mash the potatoes until mostly smooth or leave a little texture if you like.

Step 4: Stir in remaining ingredients. Adjust seasonings as needed. Serve with an extra drizzle of hot honey.

Tips For the Best Spicy Mashed Sweet Potatoes

A few easy tricks keep the texture fluffy and the flavor spot on.

  • Warm your milk before mixing so the starches stay "relaxed" and the mash stays fluffy.
  • After boiling, let the potatoes steam dry in the hot pot for a minute to prevent a watery mash.
  • Salt the cooking water, then season again in the pot so the flavor pops without using too much salt.
  • Melt equal parts butter and hot honey and drizzle it over the top right before serving.

Storage

Store it right and warm it back up so it tastes freshly made.

  • Fridge: Cool the mash completely, then store it in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Make ahead: Cook the mash the day before, then reheat and finish with fresh hot-honey butter so it tastes newly made.
  • Reheat: Warm mash over medium-low heat on the stove with a splash of milk or broth, stirring until smooth and creamy. For the oven, cover and bake at 325°F for 15-20 minutes for a smaller dish or 25-30 minutes for a larger one, stirring halfway and adding a splash of liquid if needed.
  • Freeze: Freeze for 1-2 months, then thaw overnight in the fridge and re-whip with a little butter and warm milk.

FAQ

Can I control the spice level for kids or spice-sensitive guests?

Yes. Start with less chipotle powder and taste test as you mix. Keep the hot honey on the table so adults can add more heat-sweet at the end.

How do I scale this for a crowd?

This recipe can easily be doubled. Plan about ½ pound raw sweet potatoes per person, so for 10 people use roughly 5 pounds and scale the seasonings to taste. If it's part of a larger holiday spread like Thanksgiving, the same batch will stretch to serve more since people are naturally putting smaller portions on their plate.

Can I prep the potatoes ahead of time?

Peel and cube up to 24 hours in advance, cover with cold water, and refrigerate to prevent browning, then drain well and proceed with the recipe.
