This pretzel cheese dip recipe is ready in about 15 minutes with a few simple ingredients. It’s melty, dunkable, and perfect for soft pretzels or veggie dippers.
Add butter to a medium saucepan over medium heat. When melted and foamy, whisk in flour. Cook for 1 minute, whisking, until it smells toasty but not browned.
Slowly pour in milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook 1–2 minutes until lightly thickened.
Remove the pan from the burner. Sprinkle in cheddar a handful at a time, whisking until smooth before adding more.
Whisk in Dijon, a small pinch of salt, black pepper, and hot sauce to taste.
Transfer to a warm bowl or small slow cooker on Warm. If it thickens on the table, whisk in a tablespoon or two of warm milk.
Notes
If it thickens, whisk in warm milk 1 tablespoon at a time until it loosens.
Storage: Let the dip cool for about 20 minutes, then transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
Reheat gently on the stove over low heat, whisking in 1 to 3 tablespoons of warm milk per cup of sauce until smooth again.
To hold for a party, transfer to a 1 to 2 quart slow cooker on Warm and stir every 20 to 30 minutes.
