Apple cider caramel sauce brings that fairground caramel-apple vibe home with real cider and simple ingredients. It's smooth, pourable, and ready fast. Use it for apple slices, over vanilla ice cream, or as a finish for pie!

A hand dips a green apple slice into a small jar of apple cider caramel sauce as the caramel drips back into the jar.

After a day at the orchard, this is the sweetest way to use that big jug of cider. Simmer, stir, and you've got a cozy sauce for dessert boards, waffles, and fall treats.

As a dietitian, I am always thinking about balance. A small drizzle goes a long way for flavor, and pairing sweets with fruit or yogurt adds staying power so you enjoy the treat and still feel good.

Try this sauce over my cinnamon roll apple cobbler, spoon it across caramel apple bark, or use it in dipped caramel apple grapes for a party board moment.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Big apple flavor without fuss: Real apple cider gives that caramel apple taste, so it's perfect for when you only have a little cider left!
  • Make ahead convenience: Stays smooth in the fridge, reheats in seconds, and freezes well so dessert is always ready when company pops by.
  • Small batch and beginner friendly: this recipe makes about 1½ cups, uses pantry staples, and includes easy steps so you feel confident from start to finish!

Drizzle it over caramel apple rice krispie treats for a quick fall dessert that travels well.

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to get that caramel apple flavor with zero fuss.

A top-down view shows the ingredients for apple cider caramel sauce—apple cider, brown sugar, butter, heavy cream, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Fresh apple cider: Unfiltered cider delivers the most robust apple flavor. If yours tastes mild, reduce it a bit longer before adding sugar for deeper flavor.
  • Brown sugar: Adds caramel depth and a hint of molasses. Dark or light brown sugar both work.
  • Salted butter: Balanced salt right in the butter means you do not need to chase seasoning at the end.
  • Heavy cream: Makes it pourable and glossy. Using room temperature helps prevent seizing.
  • Cinnamon: Cozy warmth that complements apple without overpowering.
  • Vanilla extract: Ties the flavors together for that classic caramel apple taste.
  • Flaky salt: Optional but adds a nice finishing and contrast.

See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions & Variations

Use these easy swaps to make this homemade apple caramel sauce your own.

  •  To make dairy free, use full-fat canned coconut milk in place of cream and a neutral vegan butter or coconut oil.
  • Swap the cinnamon for apple pie spice or add a pinch of nutmeg or clove.
  • Use ¼ teaspoon maple extract or 1 to 2 teaspoons pure maple syrup instead of vanilla for a subtle maple-caramel vibe.
  • Simmer longer for thicker sauce or whisk in a splash of warm cream to thin the sauce out.

How To Make Homemade Apple Cider Caramel Sauce

Follow these steps for the easiest apple cider caramel recipe!

Apple cider is poured from a measuring cup into a saucepan to start the caramel.

Step 1: Add the apple cider to a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until reduced to about ½ cup, 12 to 18 minutes.

Butter melts into reduced apple cider and sugar in a saucepan as the caramel gently simmers.

Step 2: Stir in the brown sugar and butter until dissolved and melted. Keep at a gentle simmer over medium-low so the bubbles stay small and steady.

Warm heavy cream is poured into the bubbling caramel to make the sauce smooth and glossy.

Step 3: Reduce heat to low, then slowly pour in the heavy cream while whisking. The mixture will bubble. Simmer 4 to 6 minutes, stirring often, until glossy and slightly thick.

A hand sprinkles flaky salt into a pot of finished apple cider caramel sauce.

Step 4: Remove from heat. Whisk in the cinnamon and vanilla. Taste, then finish with a pinch of flaky salt or save it for garnish.

Step 5: Let the caramel cool until slightly thickened before storing. It will continue to thicken as it cools.

Tips For the Best Salted Apple Cider Caramel Sauce

A few quick tips to keep your caramel glossy, smooth, and pourable every time.

  • I recommend using a heavy-bottomed saucepan so that it distributes heat evenly and prevents hot spots.
  • Cold cream can shock the caramel and cause seizing, so allow your heavy cream to come to room temperature.

Storage

Here's how to store, freeze, and rewarm it so dessert's ready when you are.

  • Fridge: Store in a clean jar for up to 2 weeks. Rewarm gently in a saucepan or 10 to 20 seconds in the microwave and stir.
  • Freeze: Caramel sauce can be stored for up to 2 months in small freezer-safe jars, leaving about ½ inch of headspace for expansion. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then rewarm gently until pourable.
  • Gifting note: Dairy caramels are not recommended for water-bath canning. Package refrigerated with a friendly "keep chilled" tag!

FAQ

Can I use apple juice instead of cider?

You can, but the flavor will be lighter. If using apple juice, reduce a little longer to concentrate before adding sugar.

How do I fix caramel that turned grainy?

Warm it over low heat with a tablespoon or two of cream and whisk until smooth.

How can I tell when it is thick enough?

Dip a spoon and run a finger across the back. If the line holds briefly, you are there. Remember it thickens as it cools!
