This cranberry bbq sauce is my favorite way to put leftover cranberry sauce to work once Thanksgiving wraps up. It brings a sweet-tart, seasonal twist to BBQ that feels perfect for fall hosting and proves that good barbecue flavor isn't just for summertime.

A jar of cranberry BBQ sauce is shown with a basting brush resting on top of it.

Here in Georgia, once the air cools off, I love having a homemade sauce that feels a little festive but still simple enough for weeknight dinners. As a Southern dietitian, I'm all about approachable seasonal recipes, and this one comes together in one pot with ingredients you probably already have on hand.

We always keep BBQ sauce on hand, and it works for so many quick meals like air fryer bbq chicken or pulled pork bowls. You can also use it in my bbq chicken sheet pan or stir it into one pot baked beans for extra flavor.

For more fruit-forward sauces, try my smokey peach, blueberry chipotle, or sweet apple bbq versions next.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Perfect for weeknights and holidays: It works for crockpot meatballs, pulled pork, smoked turkey, and simple pork glazes so you can use it all season long!
  • Make-ahead friendly: The flavors deepen as it sits which makes this a great option for hosting or prepping ahead.
  • Ready in under 20 minutes: This cranberry bbq sauce comes together quickly in one pot with hardly any work which makes it perfect for those busy fall evenings.

For an easy party appetizer, use this sauce to make my cranberry bbq sauce meatballs.

Ingredients

Here's a simple breakdown of the key ingredients that bring this sweet-tangy sauce together.

Individual bowls of ketchup, cranberry sauce, brown sugar, molasses, vinegar, bourbon, and BBQ seasoning are arranged on a countertop.
  • Ketchup: Acts as the classic BBQ base and gives the sauce body so it thickens as it simmers.
  • Cranberry sauce: Adds that bright sweet-tart flavor that makes this sauce feel perfect for fall and holiday cooking. My homemade bourbon cranberry sauce is perfect for this, but you can also use canned.
  • Brown sugar: Balances the tart cranberries and adds a warm caramel note that deepens the overall flavor.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Brings acidity to brighten the sauce and keep it from tasting overly sweet.
  • Bourbon: Adds mellow warmth and depth that complements the cranberries. It cooks down fully and leaves only flavor behind. I like using Angels Envy or Woodford Reserve.
  • Molasses: Brings rich, smoky sweetness that makes the sauce taste like a true BBQ blend.
  • BBQ dry rub blend: Adds savory seasoning and ties the whole sauce together with layers of spice. My smoky bbq rub is my holy grail!

See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions & Variations

These easy swaps help you make the sauce your own with whatever you already have on hand.

  • Replace the bourbon with water, apple juice, or orange juice to keep the sauce balanced if you prefer a non-alcoholic version.
  • Adjust the sweetness with extra brown sugar or reduce it slightly to control how sweet or tangy you want the final sauce to be.
  • Add a touch of cayenne or hot sauce to give the sauce a gentle kick that pairs well with pork or beef meatballs.
  • Blend the mixture with an immersion blender after cooking to create a smooth, restaurant-style texture.

How To Make Cranberry BBQ Sauce

Here's how to bring everything together in a quick, one-pot sauce.

A saucepan filled with ketchup, cranberry sauce, brown sugar, molasses, and seasoning sits on a stovetop before stirring.

Step 1: Add the ketchup, cranberry sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, bourbon, molasses, and dry rub to a medium saucepan.

A whisk stirs a pot of simmering cranberry BBQ sauce on the stove.

Step 2: Warm over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture begins to bubble gently.

Step 3: Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce thickens slightly and becomes glossy.

Step 4: Taste and adjust sweetness, tang, or spice as needed.

Warm cranberry BBQ sauce is being poured into a glass jar from a saucepan.

Step 5: Remove from heat and let cool before transferring to a jar.

Tips For the Best Cranberry Barbecue Sauce

Use these helpful pointers to make sure your sauce turns out just right every time.

  • Simmering the sauce low and slow gives the sweetness, acidity, and spices time to blend together into a smooth, balanced flavor.
  • Letting the sauce cool before storing allows it to thicken naturally into the perfect spoonable consistency.
  • Making a double batch is always a good idea if you plan to use it for crockpot meatballs or pulled pork for a crowd.

Storage

Here's how to store your sauce so the flavor stays fresh and ready when you need it.

  • Refrigerator: Store the sauce in an airtight jar in the fridge keeps it fresh for up to 10 days.
  • Freezer: Freezing portions in small containers gives you an easy grab-and-go option for quick dinners for up to 2 months.
  • Reheating: Warming the sauce gently on the stove or in the microwave helps it loosen back up while maintaining its smooth texture.

FAQ

Is this cranberry bbq sauce good for grilling?

Yes. It works great brushed onto chicken, pork, or turkey during the last few minutes of grilling, but avoid adding it too early since the sugars can burn.

Can I use this as a dipping sauce?

Absolutely. It is delicious as a dip for chicken tenders, sweet potato fries, or even on a holiday charcuterie board with baked brie and crackers.

Should I use whole-berry or jellied cranberry sauce?

Both whole berry and jellied cranberry sauce work well, but whole berry gives the sauce a little extra texture while jellied makes it smoother, so use whichever fits the style you prefer.

Can I use fresh cranberries instead of cranberry sauce?

Yes. You can simmer fresh cranberries with a splash of water and a little extra brown sugar until they burst, then stir them into the recipe as written.
