Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Hands-off cooking method: Once it's cooked low and slow, all you have to do is shred and toss it in your favorite BBQ sauce.
  • Subtle apple flavor: The apple juice and vinegar keep the pork tender and juicy while adding just the right touch of sweetness.
  • Perfect for feeding a crowd: Whether it's a weeknight dinner, meal prep, or game day, this slow cooker apple pulled pork stretches far and satisfies everyone.
  • Serve it your way: Load it onto pork nachos, stuff it into tacos, or build BBQ bowls with your favorite sides like cajun coleslaw!

Ingredients

This recipe keeps things simple with just a handful of ingredients. Here's what you need:

Overhead shot of labeled ingredients for apple pulled pork, including pork loin, apple juice, BBQ sauce, vinegar, and dry rub.
  • Boneless pork loin: A lean cut that becomes tender and easy to shred after slow cooking. If your loin has a thick layer of fat, you can trim it down a bit before cooking. You can also use pork butt or pork shoulder roast, which is the more traditional cut for pulled pork and gives a richer, juicier result.
  • BBQ dry rub: This adds depth and flavor right from the start. Use your favorite blend, or make it from scratch with my Sweet and Smoky Rub for a flavorful homemade option.
  • Apple juice: Keeps the pork juicy while adding a subtle apple sweetness. Look for 100% juice with no added sugar for best results.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Helps balance the sweetness with a little tang and brightens up the whole dish.
  • BBQ sauce: This brings everything together once the pork is shredded. Any BBQ sauce you love will work, but for an extra layer of flavor, try it with my homemade apple BBQ sauce.

Substitutions & Variations

Feel free to make this slow cooker pulled pork your own based on what you have or how you like your BBQ.

  • If you're out of juice, try swapping in chicken broth, pineapple juice, or even apple cider for a similar liquid base.
  • For a richer, more classic texture, go with pork shoulder or Boston butt instead of pork loin.
  • To bring in some heat, consider adding chipotle powder or using a spicy barbecue sauce you already love.
  • Once shredded, you can make it extra saucy by stirring in an additional ½ cup of BBQ sauce to coat every piece.

How to Make Apple Pulled Pork

This recipe works great in a slow cooker for an easy weeknight dinner.

Step 4: Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, until the pork is fork-tender and easy to shred.

Step 5: Shred the pork directly in the slow cooker using two forks, or remove it to a cutting board to shred, then return it to the sauce.

Step 6: You can remove some of the liquid and reduce it on the stovetop for a thicker sauce, or simply add more BBQ sauce to serve, depending on how saucy you like it.

Tips for Best Results

These simple tips can help you get the most flavor and the perfect texture from your apple pulled pork.

  • If your pork has a thick fat cap, it's a good idea to trim off the excess fat so the final dish isn't overly greasy.
  • Once cooked, let the pork rest for 10 to 15 minutes before shredding. This helps keep it juicy and easier to pull apart.
  • Before you add more sauce, give it a quick taste. You want to complement the apple flavor, not drown it out.
  • Pulled pork freezes well, so go ahead and make a double batch. Store leftovers in freezer-safe containers for easy meals later on.

Storage

Apple cider pulled pork stores so well, making it perfect for leftovers, meal prep, or freezing for later.

  • Refrigerate: Let the pork cool completely, then transfer to an airtight container. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze: Portion the pulled pork into freezer-safe containers or bags. Label with the date and freeze for up to 3 months. When you're ready to use it, thaw overnight in the fridge.
  • Reheat: Warm gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. To keep it moist, stir in a splash of apple juice, broth, or extra BBQ sauce as it heats.

FAQ

Can I make this in the oven instead of a slow cooker?

Yes! Place the seasoned pork in a Dutch oven, add the liquids, cover tightly, and bake at 225°F for about 3 to 3½ hours until fork-tender. Check halfway through and add a little more liquid if needed.

Can I make this in the Instant Pot instead of a slow cooker?

Yes, you can! Season the pork and place it in the Instant Pot with the apple juice, apple cider vinegar, and BBQ sauce. Seal the lid and cook on high pressure for 40 minutes, then allow natural release pressure. Shred the pork and stir in more BBQ sauce if desired.

What's the best way to serve crock pot pulled pork at a party?

Keep it warm in a slow cooker on the "warm" setting and serve with buns, slaw, pickles, and extra sauce on the side. This setup makes it easy for guests to build their own pork sandwiches or bowls.

Can I prep everything the night before and start cooking in the morning?

Definitely. You can season the pork and add it to the slow cooker insert with the liquids the night before. Store the insert in the fridge, then place it in the cooker and start in the morning.

Is pork loin better or worse than pork shoulder for pulled pork?

Neither is "better", they just give different results. Pork loin is leaner and a bit firmer, while pork shoulder is fattier and more traditional with extra juiciness and richness.
