Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Ridiculously easy: No complicated steps or hard-to-find ingredients. Just simple, satisfying comfort food you can whip up fast.
  • Perfect for any occasion: Whether it's a casual weeknight dinner, tailgate party, or potluck, these sliders are always the first to be devoured!
  • Kid-approved: Everything is tucked perfectly into the rolls with no mess and no complaints. Just cheesy, saucy goodness in every bite.

Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients to make these meatball hawaiian roll sliders and most of them are pantry or freezer staples!

All the ingredients laid out to make Hawaiian roll meatball sliders, including rolls, cheese, sauce, and meatballs.
  • Hawaiian sweet rolls: I recommend King's Hawaiian, but store-brand versions work too. You won't slice the rolls. Instead, press a hole into the top and turn each one into a cheesy meatball pocket!
  • Meatballs: I like making my own homemade meatballs from ground turkey for a lighter option, but you can definitely use fully cooked, frozen meatballs to save time. Just thaw and warm them in marinara before assembly. Each roll fits one standard 1-ounce meatball.
  • Marinara sauce: A store-bought jar or homemade marinara works great. Look for one with minimal added sugar and simple ingredients. You'll need enough pasta sauce to coat the meatballs, about 1 to 1½ cups.
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese: Perfect for that melty cheese layer. You'll add a layer of cheese under and over the meatball.
  • Garlic butter: Mix melted butter with garlic powder, dried parsley, and Italian seasoning. You can also add a little grated Parmesan cheese or swap in fresh herbs or minced garlic if preferred.

Substitutions & Variations

This delicious meatball sliders recipe is easy to customize, so you can make them your own with simple swaps!

  • You can use turkey, chicken, or plant-based meatballs instead of traditional beef ones if you're looking for a lighter or vegetarian option.
  • For a different flavor profile, provolone, fontina, or dairy-free cheese all melt nicely and pair well with the meatballs and marinara.
  • While Hawaiian rolls are classic, you can swap in brioche, whole wheat, or gluten-free rolls if needed. Just look for ones that are soft enough to press a pocket into.
  • Try pizza sauce, BBQ sauce, or even a vodka cream sauce if you want to mix up the flavor beyond classic marinara.
  • To sneak in extra veggies, you can tuck in sautéed spinach, roasted red peppers, or caramelized onions right into the roll pocket.
  • If you like a little heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce or drizzle hot honey over the rolls before serving.

Instructions

These easy meatball sliders come together quickly and are way less messy than you'd expect!

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 400°F and lightly grease a sheet pan or line it with parchment paper.

A glass bowl filled with cooked meatballs coated in warm marinara sauce, ready for slider assembly.

Step 1: If needed, warm your meatballs in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through. Stir in the marinara sauce so the meatballs are evenly coated.

A shot glass presses into soft Hawaiian rolls to create pockets for stuffing.

Step 2: Place the Hawaiian rolls directly on the pan. Use a shot glass or small round cutter to press a hole into the top of each roll, going about three-quarters of the way down. Be careful not to press all the way through.

Step 3: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with garlic powder, parsley, and Italian seasoning. Brush the rolls generously with the garlic butter, coating the tops, edges, and inside each hole.

Step 4: Add a little shredded mozzarella into each pocket, then press in a warm marinara-coated meatball. For extra saucy sliders, add a small spoonful of marinara on top of the meatball. Sprinkle a bit more mozzarella over each meatball and gently press it down so it stays in place.

Step 6: Bake uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the tops are golden brown.

Step 7: Let the sliders cool slightly before serving so everything holds together when lifted.

Top Tip

These simple tips will help you get the best Hawaiian meatball sliders every time.

  • When making the pockets, using a shot glass or small round cutter helps you create an even space for each meatball without tearing the bread.
  • For even baking and a gooey center, it's best to warm your meatballs and marinara sauce before assembly.
  • To keep the sliders from falling apart, make sure you don't press the pocket too deep. You want to leave a bread base to hold it all together.
  • Be sure to brush the garlic butter mixture generously over the tops and edges of the rolls for max flavor and to achieve that golden look.
  • After baking, let the sliders cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving so the cheese sets and the rolls hold their shape when pulled apart.

Storage

These hold up surprisingly well if you end up with leftover sliders or want to meal prep a batch for the week.

  • Refrigerate: Store cooled sliders in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat: Warm in the oven at 350°F for 10 to 15 minutes or microwave individual portions for 30 to 60 seconds. Reheating in the oven or air fryer helps bring that crispy top back to life!
  • Make-ahead: Assemble the sliders (without the butter topping) up to a day in advance. Cover and refrigerate. When ready to bake, brush with butter mixture and bake as directed.

FAQ

Do I have to use Hawaiian rolls?

No, but their slight sweetness is what makes these sliders extra special. Brioche or even a soft dinner roll variety would be great substitutes.

How can I make this gluten-free?

Use certified gluten-free rolls and double-check your meatballs and marinara for gluten-containing ingredients.

What's the best way to serve these sliders at a party or tailgate?

For easy serving, place each slider in a mini cupcake liner or use tongs to transfer them from the pan to a platter. They also travel well in a foil pan if you're taking them to a gathering.

What are some good side dishes to serve with meatball subs or sliders?

Try pairing them with a Cesar salad, roasted green beans, or even fruit skewers. These are perfect for rounding out an easy weeknight dinner or adding to party spreads for appetizers.
