If you love cozy fall flavors, this pumpkin apple butter is the kind of slow cooker recipe that makes your whole house smell like autumn. It's simple to toss together, naturally sweetened, and the bourbon gives it that smooth Southern touch that makes each spoonful feel extra special.

As a Southern dietitian, I love recipes that bring comfort and balance together. This one leans on real, produce-forward ingredients and just enough maple syrup to keep it naturally sweet. It's the perfect recipe for lazy weekends, fall brunch boards, or even homemade holiday gifts.

Love fall spreads as much as I do? Try my apple cider caramel sauce or fig balsamic glaze next. They pair perfectly with breakfast boards, biscuits, and brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

This recipe uses simple, seasonal ingredients that bring cozy flavor to your kitchen.

  • Canned pumpkin puree: Go for 100% pure pumpkin, not pie filling. It keeps the texture silky and lets the fall spices shine through.
  • Apples: I like using Honeycrisp or Fuji for natural sweetness, or Granny Smith if you want a little tart contrast. I keep the skin on for extra fiber and flavor, then dice them small so they cook down easily.
  • Maple syrup: Real maple syrup gives balanced sweetness and that cozy, caramel flavor that ties everything together.
  • Pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon: The perfect duo for fall warmth and aroma!
  • Bourbon: Totally optional, but a splash adds that signature Southern depth and enhances the warm, spiced flavor.

See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions & Variations

This slow cooker pumpkin apple butter is easy to customize depending on what you have on hand.

  • If you don't have bourbon, swap it for apple cider, apple juice, or water for a family-friendly version.
  • Stir in a pinch of ground ginger or nutmeg for extra warmth and depth.
  • Drizzle in a little more maple syrup at the end if you want it sweeter.

How To Make Apple Pumpkin Butter

This slow cooker version is as easy as adding everything to the pot and letting the magic happen!

Ingredients for pumpkin apple butter, including chopped apples, pumpkin puree, and spices inside a slow cooker before cooking.

Step 1: Add the apples, pumpkin puree, maple syrup, bourbon, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and spices to your slow cooker. Stir until well combined.

Step 2: Cook low and slow: Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours, stirring once or twice during cooking, until the apples are very soft and the mixture has thickened.

Step 3: Turn off the slow cooker and let the mixture cool for about 20 minutes so it's easier to blend.

Step 4: Use an immersion blender right in the slow cooker (or transfer to a blender) until smooth and creamy.

Step 5: Let the pumpkin apple butter cool completely before spooning it into jars.

Tips For the Best Homemade Pumpkin Apple Butter

A few small details make all the difference in this fruit butter spread.

  • Save time and skip peeling the apples since the skins blend right in after cooking. You won't notice a difference in texture, and it adds a little extra fiber too.
  • Cook it low and slow so the flavors have time to develop slowly without burning.
  • Taste before storing since apples vary in sweetness. Adjust maple syrup or spice to your liking.
  • Double the batch! It  freezes so well and makes an easy holiday gift for family and friends.

Ways to Use Pumpkin Apple Butter

Once you have a jar of this cozy spread, there are so many ways to enjoy it. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Spread on warm biscuits or toast for an easy Southern breakfast.
  • Swirl into oatmeal or yogurt to add natural sweetness and fall flavor.
  • Spoon over pancakes or cornbread waffles instead of syrup for a cozy twist.
  • Add to a cheese board with brie or cheddar for a sweet and savory pairing.
  • Warm with a splash of cider and brush over sheet pan pork chops.
  • Shake into a pumpkin butter cocktail with whiskey or rum for a cozy fall drink.
  • Stir into muffin or quick bread batter for extra moisture and pumpkin flavor.
  • Package in small jars and gift to friends or neighbors for a homemade fall treat.

Storage

Store this pumpkin apple butter properly so it stays fresh and flavorful.

  • Refrigerate: Keep in airtight jars for up to 10 days.
Freeze: Spoon into freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before using.
Gift idea: Label and wrap with ribbon for an easy, Southern-inspired homemade present.

FAQ

Can I use applesauce instead of fresh apples?

Yes, replace the chopped apples with 1½ cups of unsweetened applesauce and reduce the cook time to about 3 hours on low.

Can you can pumpkin apple butter?

This version hasn't been tested for safe canning, so I don't recommend it since pumpkin is low in acid and very thick.

My pumpkin apple butter is a little thin. How can I thicken it?

Cook it uncovered on low for 30 to 45 minutes and stir every few minutes, or simmer on the stovetop and stir often until it reduces. You can also blend again to smooth out excess liquid and concentrate the texture.
