Turn your favorite bottle of wine into a frozen treat with this quick and easy sangria slushie. This frozen wine slushie is refreshing, fruity, and dangerously easy to make. Whether you're poolside, porch-swingin', or planning your next backyard hang, this is the drink you'll want on repeat.

Two glasses of sangria slushie with fresh strawberries and striped straws on a white background.

This is one of those drink recipes that instantly turns up the fun. It's perfect for summer gatherings, girls' nights, or an easy treat to cool down when the Georgia heat kicks in.

I love using a mix of frozen berries and cherries and giving it a splash of OJ for a little citrusy brightness. You can skip the added sugar if your fruit is sweet enough or stir in a little simple syrup to make it extra sippable.

As a dietitian, I love that you're getting in some antioxidant-rich fruit even while you enjoy a cocktail. Balance is always on the menu around here!

Ingredients

This wine slushie recipe uses a handful of ingredients to create a cold, fruity, and satisfying cocktail!

Ingredients laid out on a white counter including a bag of frozen fruit, an orange, wine, and a bottle of simple syrup.
  • Frozen fruit: I usually use a mix of frozen strawberries, blueberries, peaches, and dark sweet cherries. This adds natural sweetness, fiber, and antioxidants and saves you time on prep.
  • Wine: A fruit-forward wine like Pinot Noir or Moscato works best. Look for something you'd enjoy sipping on its own. Not too dry or too sweet. You can also use red wine varieties if you prefer!
  • Orange juice: A splash adds natural sweetness, vitamin C, and ties it all together with that classic sangria vibe.
  • Simple syrup (optional): This is great if your fruit isn't very sweet or if you like a more dessert-like slushie. You can also use honey, agave, or my Monk Fruit Simple Syrup as lower sugar alternatives.

See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions & Variations

Whether you're making it for a party or tailoring it to your pantry, here are some helpful swaps and twists to make this sangria slushie your own.

  • For a lighter version, try using white wine or rosé. Sauvignon Blanc is also a great summer pick.
  • If you're craving something more tropical, mix things up with frozen mango and pineapple or even kiwi.
  • Pineapple juice, lime juice, or lemonade all work well in place of orange juice depending on the flavor profile you like best.
  • Looking for a mocktail option? Swap the wine for white grape juice or cherry juice to keep it fun and fruity without the alcohol.
  • A splash of peach schnapps, muscadine wine, or even a touch of bourbon adds a fun Southern twist if you're feeling bold.
  • Toss in a few mint leaves or a fresh basil sprig before blending for an extra-refreshing, garden-inspired upgrade.

Tips for Best Frozen Sangria

Here are my go-to tips to make sure your wine slushy turns out just right every time.

  • To get that smooth, icy consistency without fruit chunks, make sure to use a high-powered blender.
  • Control the thickness of your slushie by starting with less liquid and adding more orange juice as needed.
  • Since frozen fruit can vary in sweetness, be sure to taste before adding any syrup. You might not need it at all!
  • Chilled glasses help keep your slushie nice and frosty, especially when serving guests outdoors.
  • Planning ahead? You can double the recipe and stash some in the freezer so it's ready for your next front porch happy hour.
  • For a fun finishing touch, try garnishing each glass with a slice of orange, a cherry, or a sprig of mint.

Storage

Sangria slushies are best enjoyed fresh, but you can still enjoy leftovers with a little prep.

  • Freeze any extra in a freezer-safe container or pour into silicone molds or ice cube trays.
  • To serve again, just let thaw slightly and re-blend with a splash of juice or wine until it's back to slushie consistency.
  • For parties, you can make the slushie mixture ahead and freeze it in a sealed container. Then re-blend before guests arrive.
  • Use frozen cubes to chill a fresh glass of wine or spritzer without watering it down.

FAQ

Can I make sangria slushies without a blender?

You really need a blender to break down the frozen fruit into a slushie texture. A food processor could work in a pinch.

Can I use fresh fruit instead of frozen?

Yes, but for the best slushie texture, you'll need to add ice to make up for the frozen texture. Just keep in mind that ice can dilute the flavor slightly, so taste and adjust as needed.

Will this work with sparkling wine or prosecco?

It can, but keep in mind the bubbles will mostly blend out. If you want to preserve the fizz, blend the fruit and juice first, then stir in the sparkling wine at the end.

What's the best way to make simple syrup at home?

Just combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan, bring to a simmer, and stir until dissolved. Let it cool before using. If you're looking for a lower sugar option, you can use my Monk Fruit Simple Syrup instead. It adds sweetness without using regular sugar.
